For the VLBI network as seen by Sgr A*, check out this simulation by Laura Vertatschitsch (now Systems & Technology Research). The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a large telescope array consisting of a global network of radio telescopes. The EHT project combines data from several very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) stations around Earth, which form a combined array with an angular resolution sufficient to observe objects the size of a supermassive black hole's event horizon. But in the new EHT picture, we can resolve detail close to the point where this jet leaves the black hole. What's more, this base area seems twisted and somewhat offset from the main axis of the jet.

(Courtesy: George Wong (UIUC) and Michael Johnson (CfA)) Adding a space telescope to the earthbound Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) should reveal the delicate series of light rings surrounding a supermassive black hole – according to a team of astrophysicists in the US. Sheperd Doeleman, founding director of the EHT, added, "Even now we are designing a next-generation EHT that will allow us to make the first black hole movies. Stay tuned for true black hole cinema." The EHT collaboration involves more than 300 researchers from across the globe and includes 30 scientists and engineers at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. The EHT aims to close in on each black hole’s event horizon, the surface beyond which gravity is so strong that nothing that crosses it can ever climb back out. Using the EHT, with ALMA as its most sensitive component, astronomers have captured the first direct visual evidence of a black hole: an image of the supermassive black hole at the center of Messier 87 (M87), a giant elliptical galaxy 55 million light-years from Earth. The supermassive black hole has an enormous gravitational pull that can power jets of particles that move at almost the speed of light across large distances. M87’s jets give light spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to visible rays to gamma waves. This pattern is distinctive for each black hole.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, who produced the first ever image of a black hole released in 2019, has today a new view of the massive object at the centre of the Messier 87 (M87) galaxy: how it looks in polarised light.
